The Samsung Galaxy S7 and $99 Gear VR device could be a match made in virtual heaven. Could the Galaxy S7 work with Gear VR to bring virtual reality to the masses?
We’ve been staring at the VR tidal wave for so long that it sometimes feels like it’ll never actually come crashing over our collective heads. The Oculus Rift, Valve’s HTC Vive and Sony’s PlayStation VR are all promising to immerse us in a brave new virtual world, but in response many of us rub our thumb and forefingers together and say “yeah, it looks cool and all, but I’m not going to take out a mortgage for it.”
Samsung is taking aim at the sweet spot between usability and affordability with its new sub-$100 Gear VR device, announced during last week’s Samsung developer conference.
Samsung Galaxy S7: Our in-depth look
Compared to the £350 to £900 asking price of the high-end headsets, the Gear VR has a price tag that looks to corner the market for mid-range VR: above Google Cardboard, but below Sony’s PlayStation VR.
Gear VR works with Samsung smartphone screens and, with a scheduled release in November this year, the new headset could set things up nicely on the virtual reality front ahead of the Galaxy S7’s rumoured release date in February 2016. With this in mind, it wouldn’t be entirely unreasonable to predict that – dependent on the Gear VR’s success over Christmas – the Galaxy S7 will be packaged with the virtual reality headset.
Linking the Gear VR and Galaxy S7 could end up being a clever way to push phone sales, and perhaps convince those sitting on the VR fence to dip into the new technology with comparatively little extra cost. With rumours of a 4K display, the new Galaxy handset could very well end up being the device that helps bring VR to the masses.
The Galaxy S7 is reported to be coming in two model variants, referred to internally as SM-G930 and SM-G935. If I was a betting man, I’d say the former will translate to a regular S7, while the latter will end up as an S7 Edge with a curved screen.
